611,201 people affected by flood- NEMA

The National Emergency Management Agency has said no fewer than 611,201 persons were affected by flood in the country.

The agency also said 201 lives have been lost due to flood with 2,119 injured and 83,457 houses damaged.

This was disclosed at the Strategic Communications and Inter-agency Policy Committee joint briefing organised by the office of the National Security Adviser on Thursday in Abuja.

Reading the text of the brief, the spokesperson, the Nigerian Customs Service, Abdullahi Maiwada, added that the flood has affected over 154 local government areas from 29 states and displaced 225,169 persons.

He said,  “NEMA is now focused on coordinating relief interventions, with current flood impacts reported as affecting 29 states, 154 local government areas, and displacing 225,169 people.

“Overall, 611,201 individuals have been impacted, 2,119 injured, 201 lives lost, 83,457 houses damaged, and 115,265 hectares of farmland affected.”

Maiwada also said the National Emergency Management Agency distributed 42,000 metric tons of food to 611,201 flood victims, as directed by President Bola Tinubu.

He said, “The National Emergency Management Agency has completed the distribution of 42,000 metric tons of food commodities, as authorized by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to vulnerable Nigerians across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

“This initiative was carried out in coordination with key stakeholders, including the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, the Department of State Services, anti-corruption agencies, and the Office of the National Security Adviser. ”

He also said the ICPC recovered N21,529,742.19, closed twelve cases, and conducted biometric capture of 85 public officials.

Maiwada said, “The ICPC made notable progress in addressing corruption in the healthcare sector. They arrested healthcare workers for diverting supplies and uncovered tax evasion issues involving NASRDA and other MDAs. The Commission recovered N21,529,742.19, closed twelve cases, and conducted biometric capture of 85 public officials, recording 156 bank accounts under the PND portfolio.”
