Controversial Nollywood star Uche Maduagwu claims that security personnel detained him when he came out as gay in 2021.
On Tuesday, July 5, the actor declared on Instagram that he was gay from birth and would remain so forever. Maduagwu did not stop there; he also denounced the man in Bauchi who was handed the death penalty for being gay.
On Wednesday, July 6, he claimed that he was arrested for being a member of the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender (LGBT) community. He also mentioned that he would be leading a protest in the coming days following the arrest.
In contrast, LGBT people in Nigeria confront societal and legal obstacles that are not faced by non-LGBT people. LGBT behaviour is prohibited in Nigeria and carries a maximum 14-year prison sentence under the country’s traditional legal system.
