Aruna Quadri of Nigeria has won the men’s singles title in the ITTF African Championship in Algeria.
Aruna, Africa’s top-ranked tennis player, rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat top-seeded Egyptian Omar Assar 4-3.
Aruna last won the competition in 2018, with his previous two defeats coming at the hands of Assar.
Aruna stated his ambition to win the competition following his round of 16 victory, stating that he will go all out to represent his country well.
“I haven’t won the African Championship since my previous one in 2018, but I’ve played in every final since then,” he explained. It would be great to win a championship this year, and I’m looking forward to giving it my all. My main motive is because I’m representing Nigeria again, and I want to give my heart and soul to my nation as always.”
Quadri Akinade Aruna is a table tennis player from Nigeria. He represented Nigeria in the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2016 Summer Olympics, reaching the quarter-finals in the latter. He is the first African player to be placed in the top ten.
