There has been a ratcheting up of pressure on Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman Iyorchia Ayu to step down.
Nyesom Wike‘s supporters have been leading the charge to have Ayu step down as governor of Rivers State.
As part of its demands to back the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, Governor Wike’s camp had demanded that Ayu resign from office.
Governor Wike and Ayu have been going back and forth on the issue for the major opposition party for the last several weeks.
Naija News has learned that certain members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) endorse the demand, widening the rift inside the party.
It has been reported by Daily Sun that two national vice chairmen and other members of the organization have sided with Ayu’s opponents.
The governors of Oyo, Benue, Abia, and Enugu have all called for Ayu’s resignation. Those governors are Seyi Makinde of Oyo, Samuel Ortom of Benue, Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia, and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu.
This week, the party’s National Working Committee and Board of Trustees will meet to discuss what to do about the chairman position.
There have been demands for Ayu to step down as National Chairman of the PDP, but he has remained steadfast in his refusal.
Ayu made it quite obvious on Thursday that he is unconcerned about the demands for his resignation.
He said he was elected in accordance with the guidelines set down by the largest opposition party and that, should another election be held, his critics would not be successful in unseating him.
While discussing the people who are demanding his resignation, Ayu referred to them as “children” and said he would not let them to bring down the party they had worked so hard to build.
