The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) winners Rivers United were defeated 2-1 by Nasarawa United in their play on matchday 35 in Lafia, although they still won the league title.
With three games remaining until the season’s end, the Portharcourt club leads the standings by 10 points.
Sunday Okereke’s outstanding goal gave Rivers the lead in the fifth minute against Lafia, but Sikiru Olatubosun’s goal tied the score 10 minutes later.
Tochukwu On the stroke of 90 minutes, Michael then scored the game-winning goal from the penalty spot to give the hosts all three points.
Despite the loss, Rivers won the championship because Plateau United, who had been in second position, lost to Akwa United 2-1 in another match on Sunday.
Elsewhere, Katsina United and Kano Pillars boosted their survival hopes with important wins at home.
In Aba, Enyimba and Heartland battled to a 0-0 draw in the Oriental derby.
