3. Bryan Robson

Placing third on the list is arguably United’s greatest ever captain, Bryan Robson. After signing for United from West Brom in 1981, he went on to make 461 appearances for the club, scoring 99 times.

Robson won several titles during his time at United. When he left the Red Devils to join Middlesbrough in 1994, Robson had won two Premier League titles, one European Cup Winners Cup, three FA Cups, four Community Shields and one League Cup; all of these won under his captaincy.

Robson, a former United number seven, was another player who personified the team. He received the moniker “Captain Marvel” from United supporters for a cause. For 12 years, he served as the club’s manager, never skipping a beat on the field. It says it all that Robson became United’s captain after just one season with the team.

Robson was a spirited football player who contributed to every facet of the contest. He had a good eye for goal, was a tough tackler, and was a great passer. Robson was more than willing to work hard and was not scared to go over the field all day. He was a middle-fielder who was truly complete. 

Few players have been able to equal the legacy that “Captain Marvel” has left at United. He’ll be remembered as one of the best players the team has ever had.

2. Paul Scholes

Paul Scholes comes in at number two on the list. Scholes, a member of the Class of 92, has made 718 appearances for United across all competitions, ranking third among all players in United history. Scholes won 11 Premier League championships during his time at United, along with two Champions League crowns, four FA Cups, and two League Cups. 

Scholes is regarded as one of the all-time great ball-handlers. Scholes developed a signature long pass that almost always found its intended recipient, and United supporters grew accustomed to seeing it over time. One of the many fantastic players Scholes played with was frequently sent free by his passes over the top and play shifts. There is a reason he was regarded as one of the best passers in world football.

The Englishman is also in the Premier League hundred club, having scored 107 league goals. Scholes scored some iconic long-ranged efforts for United, either along the floor or one that flew into the top corner.

In the second leg of the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona in 2008, Scholes scored United’s most important goal. United’s No. 18 picked up a loose ball on the outskirts of the Barcelona area in the 14th minute, took a touch, and struck a shot into the top right corner with the game and the aggregate score still at 0-0. 

The incredible goal was enough to advance United to the Champions League championship game, which the Red Devils of course won on penalties. That was Scholes’ first championship game and second Champions League trophy. He was forced to miss the final in 1999 due to suspension, like Keane.

A class act all over the pitch, Paul Scholes was a player who could do it all and is unquestionably of United’s greatest ever players. He only just misses out on first on this list.

1. Sir Bobby Charlton

Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest English players of all time, takes the top slot. With 249 goals and 758 appearances for the Red Devils, Charlton is second all-time in both goal scoring and appearances for United. He is a member of The Holy Trinity, along with George Best and Dennis Law. 

At the young age of 20, Charlton took part in the horrific Munich Air Disaster, which resulted in the deaths of 23 persons. After his comeback, Charlton became a crucial part of United. Along with his first championship in 1956/57, Charlton assisted the team in winning league crowns in 1964/65 and 1966/67 under the famous manager Sir Matt Busby. In 1963, Charlton also won the FA Cup.

Charlton also helped United to win the club’s first-ever European Cup, in the 1967/68 season. In the final, which was held at Wembley Stadium, United beat Portuguese side Benfica 4-1. In arguably his finest moment for United, Charlton scored United’s first and fourth goals, either side of goals from Best and Brian Kidd. Prior to Wayne Rooney’s free kick against Stoke City in January 2017, his 249 goals set a club record. Rooney broke his storied record when Charlton was present. Its longevity is evidence of how great of a record it was, particularly for someone who did not play forward. 

Charlton won the Ballon d’Or in 1966, the same year that England won the World Cup. He succeeded Law, who won it in 1964, as the second United player to take home the trophy. He finished second the next two years as well, but lost to Best in 1968. Since the 1960s, Cristiano Ronaldo is the only United player to have won it. He did so in 2008.

Sir Bobby Charlton does not have a statue outside Old Trafford for nothing. He has an incredible story and is one of the most legendary figures in the club’s history. Unquestionably, he deserves to rank first place on this list.
