Students are to resume academic activities after 119 days of closure of Oyun Baptist High School, Ijagbo, over the hijab crisis as the Kwara State Government approves the reopening of the school as female students are allowed to put on hijab.
The closure was due to hijab between Christian and Muslim parents who besieged the school to defend their respective faith over the wearing of hijab by female Muslim students in the school.
There were casualties during the crisis. About 150 students in their final year were affected and were to sit for the West Africa School Certificate Examinations.
In a statement signed by Mrs. Mary Adeosun, the Permanent Secretary for the State Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development stated that the school will be reopened on Friday, the 3rd of June, 2022.
The decision to reopen the school is one of the government’s many approaches to restoring normalcy to the school.
All teachers and students are directed to return to their classrooms while the government white paper committee continues to address pending issues regarding the recent disturbance in the public school.
Likewise, the Ministry restates the position of the state government that Muslim schoolgirl who wishes to wear the hijab is allowed to do so in all public schools including Oyun Baptist School which is owned by the state government and run with public resources.
The ministry urges everyone to embrace peace and maximize the use of the classroom.
