The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has arraigned 146 drivers arrested for various traffic offenses in the state.
The agency’s Director, Public Affairs Unit, Taofiq Adebayo, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.
He said the General Manager, Bolaji Oreagba, stated that the alleged offenders were arraigned before the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences mobile court.
He said, “77 offenders are being prosecuted for one-way driving, five for willful obstruction, five for illegal parking, two for unpainted commercial vehicle, five for wrongful overtaking, four for driving on walkways, six for BRT obstructions, 10 for reckless and dangerous driving, four for picking and dropping passengers at undesignated bus stops and five for disobeying traffic control officers among others.
“It is disheartening that despite the state government’s vigorous public enlightenment and advocacy campaign via various media outlets, including online sensitisation on the dangers inherent in disobeying traffic rules and regulations, some recalcitrant drivers are still endangering the safety of other road users on Lagos roads”
Adebayo said Oreagba urged all road users including commercial bus drivers to always drive with caution, particularly during the “Ember Months”.
The agency’s Director, Legal Department, Akerele Oseni, said the prosecution would serve as a deterrent to other recalcitrant road users.
