Our business controls global economy, says scrap dealers

The Association of Scrap and Waste Dealers Employers of Nigeria, on Wednesday, claimed that their business is among those in control of the global economy.

The Chairman of the association, Kano Zone, Aminu Soja made the declaration at the inauguration of the caretakers committee and task force against vandalism, held in Kano on Wednesday.

According to him, industries across the globe, especially in China, depend on scrap items as raw materials to ease production, following the industrial revolution that happened decades ago.

Soja noted that 70 per cent of companies across the world would shut down if scrap business is stopped, noting that they are one of the big employers of labour in Nigeria, with over 2 million members.

“Scrap and waste business controls the economy of the world. Industries across the globe depend on scrap and waste business, especially China as it eases production because they’re used as raw material. If the scrap business is shut down, all the production of commodities would be shut down.

“The era of digging iron ore and subject to melting processes is over. Scrap materials are used to produce commodities, using recycled raw materials. The business contributed immensely to the security fight as it provided employment opportunities.

“We have over 2 million people in the business from dealers, agents and kickers. This takes off employment burden on the government,” he said.

Also, Soja noted that they have inaugurated 200 task force operatives, out of which 100 would serve as surveillance, while the other 100 would operate in uniform to check vandalism and the buying of stolen goods.

“We will deploy them to our markets to make sure that the problem of buying stolen items is over.

“We have constituted this task force to further sanitize our business. People see us as thieves and we always say we are not thieves. We are running a legitimate business.

“We assure government and private agencies of our readiness to partner with them in the fight against vandalism”, he said.

He restated  their commitment to partner with security agencies in a bid to flush out bad eggs among them and sanitise the business
