Premier League clubs ‘fearful’ of further fixture postponements

[ad_1]

The Premier League‘s teams are concerned that after this weekend’s games were postponed in honor of the late Queen Elizabeth II, next weekend’s round of fixtures may also be delayed.

The league’s board unanimously decided to postpone this weekend’s schedule on Friday, and matches across the nation, even those at the grassroots level, were similarly canceled.

When other sports, like rugby union and cricket, elected to continue in the Queen’s honor, the decision was criticized.

According to The Guardian, Premier League teams are concerned they might also drop their games the following weekend. There are no top-flight games scheduled for Monday, September 19, but there may be additional logistical difficulties because a state burial is anticipated to take place on that day.

There may not be enough security for football games that weekend, especially those in London where Tottenham plays Leicester on Saturday, Brentford plays Arsenal, and Chelsea plays Liverpool on Sunday. The funeral will require a sizable police operation.

Due to a scheduled train strike that day, Brighton’s match against rival Crystal Palace on Saturday had to be postponed; however, the strike has subsequently been called off as a result of the Queen’s passing.

Clubs are concerned that, given the already hectic schedule, there won’t be much time left to play any additional rescheduled games. According to the article, most teams believe it would be preferable to play some of the next matchdays rather than cancel it completely.
