Russian President Vladimir Putin sent his sympathies to Britain on Thursday for the “irreparable loss” of Queen Elizabeth, who died earlier in the day at the age of 96, according to Russian news media.

In the middle of conducting his murderous and barbaric campaign against Ukraine, which has brought ties between Russia and Britain to new lows, Putin sent a telegram to King Charles III.

Putin said in a greeting to Britain’s new monarch, Charles, that the Queen “rightfully enjoyed the affection and respect of her subjects, as well as power on the global arena.”

“I wish you bravery and resilience in the face of this awful, irreversible loss,” he continued. “Please convey my heartfelt sympathies and solidarity to members of the royal family and the whole British people.”

The condolences come after the Queen appeared to have gotten the better of Putin on a state visit to the UK in 2003-the first by a Russian leader since Queen Victoria’s reign, when Alexander II visited in 1874.
