Lamido Sanusi, the former Emir of Kano, has detailed how his unrepentant attitude of speaking the truth to authority cost him his posts as governor G G of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Emir of Kano.
Sanusi said this on Wednesday in Abuja, at the concluding ceremony of the AIG Public Leadership Program Class of 2021 that, instead of civil employees adhering to ethics and fulfilling their responsibilities creditably for the benefit of the populace, “over 80% of them have lost their conscience” for personal gain.
“A public servant serves Nigeria, not any head of state, governor, or minister,” he says. “This is what is absent presently in the country; thus, the judiciary, health, agriculture, education, transportation, and electricity sectors are suffering.”
“If you are a civil official and fail to speak up and care for the people you are expected to plan for by executing beneficial government projects, I suggest you to retire.” Remember, your failure will undoubtedly have an impact on your children in the future.”
Noting that he has always stood up to tell the truth to power, he was removed as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and deposed as thevEmir of Kano, but that has not stopped him from doing what he believes is right.
“Today, you see civil servants stealing millions and billions of naira intended to develop roads, provide power, water, education, food, and transportation, to the disadvantage of the majority of Nigerians,” Sanusi continued.
All of these have resulted in the worst risks to human life in Nigeria, with Boko Haram, killer herdsmen, robbers, and various gun conflicts, especially among the youths.”
He urged the beneficiaries to put their expertise to good use in the service of their country by reorienting the civil service toward productivity through transparency, accountability, dignity, and outcomes for good governance.
