As part of efforts to tackle banditry and other security challenges, the Sokoto State Government has handed over 20 Hilux vans and 710 motorcycles to the newly established Community Guard Corps in the state.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, Col. Abdul Usman (Rtd.), handed over the vehicles and motorcycles on Thursday to the commanders of the 13 local government areas most affected by banditry at the state headquarters of the corps.

Represented by the Director of the Administration Department of Security Matters, Almustafa Sayudi, Col.
Usman said the vehicles were provided to better equip the corps to penetrate the remotest parts of their communities.

He urged the corps personnel to ensure the vehicles and motorcycles are used responsibly.

“These vehicles and motorcycles are not for personal use but for official use only. Remember that the government has spent a significant amount of money to purchase them, so ensure their proper use and regular maintenance,” Col. Usman appealed.

He reiterated the administration’s commitment to ensuring the state’s security at all times.

He reminded the Sokoto State Community Guard Corps that their role is complementary, stating, “You are expected to support conventional security agencies in safeguarding our rural dwellers.”

Col. Usman also appealed for cooperation from rural communities, especially in the 13 most-affected local government areas, to help the corps carry out their duties diligently.

The Sokoto State Commissioner for Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ibrahim Dadi Adare, also spoke at the event, announcing that special funds have been set aside for the proper maintenance of the vehicles.

In his remarks, the State Commander of the Corps, Col. Musa Na Allah Idris (Rtd.), assured the state government that the vehicles would be properly maintained.

He expressed confidence that with the training provided to the corps personnel, they would give their best efforts to rid the state of banditry, and he appealed for support from all members of the community in this endeavour.
